In recent years, the industrial style has been gaining in popularity, and no wonder. It represents a fresh approach to living that works with contrasts, large spaces and interesting materials. As part of our series on housing styles, we turned to the interior designers at Tempus Design to help us grasp the concept of industrial style with everything you need to know.

EMERGENCY HOUSING

The industrial style arose as a result of the housing shortage in New York in the late 1960s. Artists in particular began to move into the abandoned factory halls of southern Manhattan for financial reasons. And because they were starting from scratch, they didn't worry about the raw look of the interiors, nor did they worry about the furniture: They used existing furniture and added second-hand pieces. The foundation of industrial living was laid and its philosophy and spirit remained, even though in the large halls poor artists were replaced by wealthy businessmen looking for an original way of living and living.

INDUSTRIAL STYLE TODAY...

...hasn't disappeared. On the contrary, it's gaining popularity again. Architecturally interesting industrial buildings from the middle of the last century are no longer automatically demolished, on the contrary, developers are converting them into residential units, stylish restaurants and shops, which, unlike the bland new buildings, do not lack atmosphere. "In the last few seasons we have seen an increase in client requests for interior design in industrial style," says architect Thiago Cataldo Matos, adding: "This is happening for good reason. We find a mix of old and new, it has a unique atmosphere that creates a perfect play of contrasts." But what does industrial-style design really mean? So how do you make the look work exactly how you want it to without making it feel heavy-handed?

HOW TO MAKE INDUSTRIAL STYLE

Contrasts play an essential role in his interior design. The easiest way to achieve them is to place different types of wood and metal side by side. When buying wooden pieces, ideally there is one decor to stick to. Concentrate on finding furniture that looks like it has something behind it. Of course you can purchase brand new but with a patina, this will save you the time you would have spent scouring yard sales and antique stores. On the other hand, such a search has its charm and you can find real treasures.

Tips on how to furnish an industrial interior:

  • Choose a neutral colour palette, it enhances the minimalist, harmonious and clean "look".
  • In most cases, industrial-style interiors tend to be spacious, so to avoid unnecessarily large empty areas, group the furniture into several smaller groups to break up the whole space.
  • Combine wood and metal, mix the old with the new, the contrasts are great.
  • Make lighting an accessory, choosing pendant lights and multi-directional lamps.
  • Accessories add style to the interior and with their help you can project your personality into the interior. Choose, for example, parts of factory machinery, old photographs, slightly damaged objects, simply anything with a touch of history and objects with a soul.
  • One of the characteristic features of industrial-style interiors is the presence of details that we otherwise tend to hide. These are often lighting cables, various pipes and ducts. Let them stand out.

And what do you think about industrial design? Is it close to your heart, or do you prefer a rustic interior, or on the contrary, classic?
